Security Starts With Ownership

Crypto security begins with one simple question:

Who controls the keys needed to move your XRP?

There are two common ways to hold crypto: custodial and self-custody.

Custodial

With custodial storage, a company such as an exchange controls the wallet infrastructure and holds the keys on your behalf. You access your account using a password, passkey, two-factor authentication, or other login method.

This can be convenient, especially for newer investors. But it also means you are trusting that company to protect the assets and continue allowing you access to them.

Self-Custody

With self-custody, you control the wallet credentials yourself. A software wallet or hardware wallet gives you direct control over the keys used to authorize transactions.

That removes some third-party risk, but it also gives you more responsibility.

If someone gains control of the private credentials for your wallet, they may be able to control the XRP in that wallet. If you lose the information required to recover the wallet, there may be no company that can restore it for you.

Neither approach is automatically right for everyone. The important thing is understanding which risks you are taking and choosing a setup you can manage safely.

Hot Wallet vs. Cold Wallet

One of the first security decisions an XRP holder faces is whether to use a hot wallet, cold wallet, or a combination of both.

Hot Wallet

A hot wallet is a software wallet used on an internet-connected device such as a phone or computer.

Advantages

  • Convenient for regular access
  • Easy to send and receive XRP
  • Useful for interacting with XRP Ledger features
  • Often simple for beginners to set up and use

Tradeoffs

Because the wallet operates on an internet-connected device, it has more exposure to risks such as malicious software, compromised devices, phishing, fake apps, and social engineering.

A well-designed hot wallet can still be secure, but the security of the phone or computer matters.

Cold / Hardware Wallet

A hardware wallet keeps the private keys used to authorize transactions isolated inside dedicated hardware. The device can connect to a phone or computer, but the goal is to sign transactions without exposing the private keys to the normal internet-connected device.

Advantages

  • Reduces exposure of private keys to malware and online attacks
  • Often a strong choice for long-term holdings
  • Transactions typically require confirmation on the physical device

Tradeoffs

  • Less convenient for frequent transactions
  • Requires careful backup and recovery planning
  • Losing the recovery information can be far more serious than losing the device itself

Cold storage is not magic. A hardware wallet cannot protect you if you willingly give a scammer your recovery phrase or approve a transaction you do not understand.

Choosing the Right Wallet

The best wallet is not simply the one with the longest list of security features. It is the one you understand well enough to use correctly.

Think in terms of convenience vs. security.

A hot wallet may make sense for XRP you access regularly. A hardware wallet may make more sense for long-term holdings you rarely need to move.

Some holders choose to use both:

  • a smaller amount in a convenient hot wallet
  • longer-term holdings in hardware storage

Before choosing any wallet, understand:

  • Who controls the private keys?
  • How is the wallet backed up?

Your Seed Phrase Is the Crown Jewels

A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase, wallet backup, or secret recovery phrase, is usually a list of words created when a self-custody wallet is set up.

Those words can be used to restore access to the wallet if the original device is lost, damaged, reset, or replaced.

That makes the seed phrase incredibly powerful.

Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase may be able to restore your wallet and control the assets protected by it.

Treat it more carefully than a normal password.

Do

  • Write the words down accurately and in the correct order.
  • Follow the wallet manufacturer's official backup instructions.
  • Keep the backup offline.
  • Store it somewhere protected from theft, fire, water, and accidental loss.
  • Consider a durable metal backup for long-term protection against physical damage.
  • Make sure you know how your wallet's recovery process works before you need it.

Do Not

  • Take a screenshot of your seed phrase.
  • Photograph it with your phone.
  • Save it in normal cloud storage or cloud notes.
  • Email it to yourself.
  • Text it to yourself or anyone else.
  • Paste it into a random website.
  • Give it to someone claiming to be wallet support.
  • Enter it because a pop-up says your wallet needs to be "validated," "verified," "synced," or "reconnected."

The rule worth remembering

Legitimate support should not need your seed phrase to help you.

If someone contacts you and asks for your recovery phrase, stop.

Do not let urgency override common sense.

PINs, Passwords, Passkeys & Wallet Passphrases

Crypto security uses several terms that sound similar but do very different jobs.

PIN

A PIN commonly unlocks a physical hardware wallet, phone, or wallet application.

A PIN may stop someone who finds your device from immediately accessing it, but it is not the same thing as your seed phrase.

Password

A password usually protects an online account, such as an exchange account.

Use a unique password that you do not reuse on other websites.

Passkey

A passkey is a modern way to sign in to a website or app without relying on a traditional password. Passkeys are tied to the specific service and are typically unlocked using your device's fingerprint, face recognition, screen-lock PIN, or another secure method.

Passkeys can provide strong protection against phishing because they are designed for the specific site or app they belong to.

When a reputable exchange or service supports passkeys, they can be an excellent login option.

Wallet Passphrase

A wallet passphrase is different.

Some hardware-wallet systems allow an optional additional word or phrase to be combined with the wallet backup to access a separate wallet.

This can add another layer of protection, but it is an advanced feature.

A typo, missing space, capitalization change, or forgotten passphrase can lead to a completely different wallet. In systems that use this feature, the passphrase may not be recoverable or resettable.

Do not enable an advanced wallet passphrase just because it sounds more secure. Understand exactly how your wallet implements it first.

Physical Backups: Protect the Backup, Too

Digital security gets most of the attention, but physical security matters just as much.

If your seed phrase is written on paper and that paper is destroyed in a fire, ruined by water, thrown away, or discovered by the wrong person, your security plan has failed.

Possible backup approaches include:

a fire-resistant and water-resistant safe or lockbox
a secure bank safe-deposit arrangement where appropriate
a purpose-built metal seed backup
a protected secondary backup location
geographically separated backups for significant holdings

There is a tradeoff.

More backups reduce the chance that one disaster destroys your only recovery method. But every additional copy creates another item you must protect.

Avoid making the backup obvious. A sheet labeled “MY CRYPTO SEED PHRASE” is not exactly subtle.

Whatever system you choose, make sure it is something you can realistically maintain for years.

Exchange Security

Many XRP holders buy or keep some crypto on centralized exchanges. If you do, secure the exchange account as carefully as you would protect a financial account.

Strong exchange-security habits

  • Use a unique password.
  • Use a passkey or hardware security key when the exchange supports it.
  • Otherwise, use strong two-factor authentication such as an authenticator app.
  • Do not rely on SMS as your strongest security option when stronger methods are available.
  • Turn on withdrawal allowlists if the service offers them and they fit how you use the account.
  • Use anti-phishing codes or similar account protections when available.
  • Never approve a login or security request you did not initiate.
  • Bookmark the real exchange website rather than clicking random search ads or messages.
  • Verify the sender before acting on security emails.

Keeping XRP on an exchange and keeping XRP in self-custody involve different risks.

An exchange can help with account recovery and may offer strong security systems, but you are relying on that company. Self-custody gives you direct control, but it also makes your own backup and security habits critical.

Understand both before deciding where to keep your XRP.

Can I Share My XRP Wallet Address?

Yes — an XRP public address is designed to be shared when you need to receive XRP.

But public does not mean private.

The XRP Ledger is a public blockchain. Ledger data and transactions can be searched and queried. If someone knows an XRP address belongs to you, they may be able to examine activity connected with that address, including transactions and balances visible on the ledger.

Your public XRP address is not your private key and does not give someone the ability to spend your XRP by itself.

Still, publishing an address can create a privacy issue.

Do

  • Share your public XRP address when you need someone to send XRP to you.
  • Verify the address before sharing or using it.
  • Understand that activity associated with that address may be publicly visible.
  • Consider using different addresses for different purposes if privacy is important to you.

Do Not

  • Share your seed phrase, private key, recovery information, or wallet PIN.
  • Assume an XRP address is anonymous simply because your name is not written on the blockchain.
  • Publicly advertise a large-balance wallet without considering the security and privacy implications.
  • Post screenshots that expose more wallet information than necessary.
  • Give "support" additional secret information just because they already know your public address.

Information does not have to be secret to create a privacy risk.

Think before publicly connecting your real-world identity, social-media profile, or personal information to a wallet holding a meaningful amount of crypto.

Sending & Receiving XRP Safely

Blockchain transactions require attention because they may not have the same reversal protections people expect from traditional payment systems.

Before sending XRP

  • 1Confirm that you are sending on the correct network.
  • 2Carefully verify the receiving XRP address.
  • 3Confirm any required Destination Tag.
  • 4If using a hardware wallet, verify transaction details on the hardware device itself.
  • 5Do not trust an address simply because someone pasted it into a direct message.
  • 6For a new or unfamiliar destination, consider sending a small test transaction first when practical.
  • 7Slow down if anyone is pressuring you to send quickly.

One extra minute of verification can prevent a very expensive mistake.

Destination Tags: Don't Skip This

A Destination Tag is an XRP Ledger feature commonly used by exchanges and other services that receive XRP for many different customers through a shared address.

Think of it like an apartment number.

XRP Address

= gets the XRP to the service

Destination Tag

= tells the service which customer gets credited

The wallet address gets the payment to the right building. The Destination Tag tells the service which customer should receive credit for that deposit.

If an exchange or receiving service gives you both:

XRP Address + Destination Tag

use both exactly as provided.

If you leave out the Destination Tag or enter the wrong one, the XRP may reach the company's wallet but fail to be automatically credited to the correct customer account. Resolving the problem can require manual support, and recovery is not something you should assume will always be simple.

Before sending to an exchange or service

  • Copy the XRP address from the official deposit screen.
  • Copy the Destination Tag exactly.
  • Verify both before sending.
  • Do not reuse an old deposit instruction if the service tells you to generate or verify current details.
  • Consider a small test transaction when appropriate.

When sending to your own normal self-custody XRP address, a Destination Tag often is not required unless the receiving wallet or service specifically tells you to use one.

Other cryptocurrencies and services may use similar routing fields with names such as Memo, Tag, or another identifier.

Always follow the instructions shown by the receiving wallet or service.

Common XRP & Crypto Scams

Scammers do not need to break the XRP Ledger if they can convince you to hand them access.

Learn to recognize the patterns.

Fake Giveaways

“Send 5,000 XRP and receive 10,000 XRP back.”

No legitimate giveaway needs you to send crypto first in order to receive more back.

Fake Support

A stranger contacts you after you mention a wallet problem online.

They offer to help — then ask for your recovery phrase, private key, screen share, or a “verification” step.

Real support should not need your seed phrase.

Fake Ripple or Executive Accounts

Scammers may impersonate Ripple, exchanges, wallet companies, Brad Garlinghouse, David Schwartz, or other recognizable people.

A profile picture, blue check, copied logo, or professional-looking video is not proof by itself.

Verify announcements through official sources.

Phishing Websites

A fake website can look almost identical to a real exchange or wallet page.

Check the domain before entering credentials. Avoid signing in through unexpected links.

Fake Wallet Updates

Be cautious of messages telling you your wallet must be:

  • validated
  • synchronized
  • upgraded
  • reactivated
  • reconnected

especially when they send you to an unfamiliar website or ask for recovery information.

Malicious Links and QR Codes

A QR code is just another way of encoding information. Do not assume it is safe because it is convenient.

Know what you are opening, signing, or sending before you approve it.

Urgency and Fear

Scammers love phrases like:

“Act in the next 10 minutes.”

“Your wallet will be suspended.”

“You will lose your XRP if you do not verify now.”

Urgency is one of a scammer's favorite tools. Slow down and verify independently.

What If My Hardware Wallet Is Lost or Destroyed?

This is one of the most important concepts for new hardware-wallet users to understand:

Your XRP is not physically stored inside the hardware wallet.

The XRP exists on the XRP Ledger.

The hardware wallet protects the private keys and signing process used to control the wallet.

If a compatible hardware wallet is lost, damaged, destroyed, or reset, access can generally be restored using the correct wallet backup/recovery information according to the wallet manufacturer's supported recovery process.

That is why protecting the recovery phrase is so important.

You may be able to replace a broken device.

You cannot simply call the blockchain and ask it to reset a lost seed phrase.

The device can often be replaced. Your recovery information cannot.

Always follow the official recovery instructions from your wallet manufacturer. Do not enter your recovery phrase into a random website or software wallet simply because someone online tells you it is compatible.

Inheritance & Emergency Planning

Security is not only about stopping thieves.

It is also about making sure your XRP does not become permanently inaccessible if something happens to you.

Ask yourself:

  • Does a trusted person know that these assets exist?
  • Would the right person know where to begin if I could no longer access them?
  • Are recovery instructions protected but understandable?
  • Is my backup so hidden that nobody could ever find it?
  • Have I considered estate planning for meaningful holdings?

The goal is not to leave your seed phrase sitting in an envelope where anyone can find it.

The goal is to create a secure plan that allows the right person to recover the assets under the right circumstances.
